Flower-I

Across the CSW paintings series, one structure repeats, a mesh of dark, threadlike contour lines standing in for a system, a nervous fabric of nodes and crossings that Ghossoub runs through a full spectrum of states: cyan, peach, green-yellow, deep blue, red. In most of the series the web stays open, diagrammatic, closer to circuitry laid bare than to picture-making. The two Flower paintings are where it closes: the same lines drawn tight enough to become a single form, a bloom instead of a network. Read side by side, Flower I and Flower II feel like two readings of one question; what a cybernetic system looks like in the instant it stops transmitting signal and starts taking shape, first as something still forming in blue, then as something fully arrived in red. It is the same inquiry that has run through Ghossoub’s work since her research into cybernetics and postwar art: not technology observed from outside, but the felt experience of a system becoming, briefly, something you could call alive.
