Composition-I

This one reads less like a single figure and more like a map someone drew from memory, a river of navy blue, doubled with a thread of white, wandering the length of the canvas through a warm ochre ground that holds the heat of the whole piece. Ghossoub lets the line do the storytelling: it loops into a small circle with a dot near the top left that could almost be an eye, unravels into a pale, scribbled cluster like handwriting gone illegible, then knots itself dense and dark in the lower right before a handful of stray filaments break off toward the upper corner and run out of the frame entirely, as if the composition kept going past its own edge. A narrow strip of rose and tan along the left border acts almost like a spine, holding the wandering line in check. There’s a looseness here that feels more like drawing than painting, quick, searching, unresolved in places on purpose, and closer to a private notation of thought than a finished picture of anything.
