Becoming the Light

Becoming the Light is the final painting of the State of Becoming series; the point of arrival after a progression that moved through anticipation, fracture, dissolution, gravity, and reorganization. Where the preceding works carry weight, dense blues, and submerged tension, this painting breathes: the palette opens fully, and blues that were once dense and absorbing become atmospheric and suffused with light.

The diagonal marks that recur throughout the series as forces of pressure here feel like movement through open air rather than resistance. A quiet warmth enters the upper register; not gold buried in darkness, as in earlier works, but light arriving naturally. This is not resolution in a conventional sense; it is, in the artist’s words, the moment when the process of becoming generates its own illumination.

The composition is built through layered, atmospheric abstraction, with submerged architectural traces, suspended motion, and buried metallic textures creating a field of tonal instability. A sweeping diagonal force crosses the upper register, becoming luminous where it meets passages of gold and cream; the painting’s single most open moment of visible energy. Below this, the surface deepens and stills, holding denser, quieter tones that carry the accumulated weight of the layers beneath. Gold appears embedded through the lower passages, not applied as a bright accent but surfacing as if uncovered from within the paint’s structure.
