The Spectrum of Silence

The Spectrum of Silence — Alaa Albaldawi

The colour has been pulled from the world. What remains is gold, deep brown, slate, and shadow, a palette stripped down to its bones, as if silence itself has a colour and this is it. Faces emerge from the darkness with heavy-lidded eyes and sealed mouths, layered one behind the other like witnesses who have seen too much and been given no language for it. A keyhole appears at the top that is locked, always locked. Flashes of copper and rose gold catch the surface here and there, glinting like memory through the impasto texture. Animals press in from below. Figures lean into each other, not for comfort but for weight; the weight of shared endurance. Where The Noise of Silence was a world that could not speak, this is its companion: the full range of what silence costs, grief, patience, survival, dignity, and each occupying its own frequency, each as real as the last. Not one silence. A spectrum.
