Glances of the past

Glances of the Past — Alaa Albaldawi

A grid of memory. Cool cerulean blue and warm ochre lock together across the canvas in a precise, almost architectural geometry; and the past reconstructed not as nostalgia but as structure, as something that still holds weight and shape. Faces appear within the grid like figures glimpsed through a latticed window: a large circular profile on the left, calm and ancient; a horned bull rising from the centre like a Mesopotamian deity; a fish suspended mid-composition; a solitary upright figure at the far right, refined and still, watching everything from a slight distance. Each form is contained within its own tile of colour yet inseparable from the whole; the past is not a series of isolated moments but an interlocking system, each memory dependent on the ones beside it. You cannot pull one free without disturbing all the others. That is what a glance backward actually reveals, not a single image, but an entire civilisation still standing, still looking back at you.
